When protestant Daniel Nielson, fleeing religious persecution with his wife Esther and son Aaron, is the first-ever client of alcalde Ramon's land office in years actually to claim a piece of Los Angeles, he accepts, despite Diego and Victoria's warning it's a barren wilderness, 40 acres in the rocky Mesa de las Piedras.
