Scientists bore a drill 1,000 meters below the seafloor of the 7,000 meter-deep Japan Trench. What was the purpose of this rather daring undertaking? They were drilling at the boundary of 2 quake-causing tectonic plates hoping to shed light on what caused the massive earthquake and tsunamis of March 11, 2011 in northern Japan.
