The investigation begins with an interview of Fowler's business partner, Emmett Stone, which leads the detectives to investigate the source of Fowler's wealth; Fowler had grown up in foster homes and joined the Marine Corps virtually penniless, but when he was discharged four years later he was a multimillionaire.
