The illegal logging trade in Romania, where a so-called timber mafia is chopping down Europe's last remaining virgin forests. Environmental campaigners and law enforcement believe that half of the timber harvested in Romania is illegal. The European Union has launched legal action against the Romanian government, which continues to authorise logging in protected areas that are rich in wildlife and vital in the fight against climate change.
