On New Year's Day, Thomas Becker, son of the powerful building contractor Henry Becker, is shot in his car in a parking lot.

Commissioner Barbara Falck and her colleague Christian Krämer initially suspect a connection with the collapse of the "residential cube". This is an ambitious construction project by "Becker & Sohn" under the leadership of Thomas' half-brother Eric.

A young cleaner was killed in the collapse. The suspicion is reinforced by the fact that Henry Becker was hit by a car on New Year's Eve and has been seriously injured in the hospital ever since.
